Lets look back to a magical year called 1984. Vanessa Williams had to leave the Miss USA title behind in the wake of her Penthouse scandal. The first Mac computer went on sale. And the musical rivalries of the day were Madonna versus Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Jackson versus Prince. Back then you might have placed your money on MJ being the victor of that musical showdown, the one to have a career that stood the test of time. What a difference almost a quarter-century makes. Now Michael Jackson needs Band-Aids to hold his face together, and the artist formerly known as Prince Rogers Nelson remains relevant, fresh, and wildly popular. Visit 1984 and remember more of the good times at Sweat Records, where Purple Rain screens as part of the stores new series, Music Movie Mondays.
Sweats weekly screenings will give hip locals something to do on the most boring night of the week, and given the range of the shops musical tastes, you can be sure the series will never get stale. In August, Sweat is prepping for the Wholphin special edition, an event featuring the freshest sounds by McSweeneys DVD magazine. But this Monday night is all about Lets Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Darling Nikki, and, of course, the title track thatll melt your sugar walls. Get your butts in the seats at 8 p.m.; the film begins promptly at 8:30. Visit www.sweatrecordsmiami.com.
